Found only along the coasts of South Africa and Namibia, the African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is known for its distinctive black-and-white "tuxedo" markings and the pink patches of bare skin above its eyes.
Once numbering in the millions, the species has suffered a devastating decline. Its global population has dropped nearly 80% over the last three decades, and in 2024 it was classified from Endangered to Critically Endangered, making it the first penguin species to reach that classification.
Designed by Demi Bucklow, this patch design was first hand-sketched before being digitised. A small tribute to a bird that's become an urgent symbol of South Africa's marine conservation efforts.
